What's in Season? Your Guide to Fresh Flowers in Indianapolis

One of the best parts about ordering flowers from a local florist is accessibility to locally grown flowers that are blooming right now. At Willow and Star, our flower selection and the blooms we include in our arrangements changes daily. We love leaning into the beauty of each season.

Seasonal flowers are often fresher, more vibrant, and more distinctive than flowers sourced year-round. As an Indianapolis-based florist, we may not have access to local blooms 365 days a year, but when they’re available to us, we prioritize them in our work.

What can you expect to find on our flower bar and in our arrangements throughout the seasons?

Spring

As the Indiana days grow a little longer and warmer, we begin to see the arrival of some of our favorite blooms! The flower bar is filled with tulips, ranunculus, anemones, daffodils, snapdragons, and flowering branches.

We can’t forget peonies, the Indiana state flower and a fan favorite. While peonies used to bloom in late spring and early summer, the ruffly beauties have bloomed a little earlier made an appearance in early May the past couple of years. We always love to see them coming!

Summer

Summer shows off a spectacular display of colorful, showy blooms. In central Indiana, we’re lucky that many flower varieties thrive in the sunny, warm climate. We love working closely with local growers to source dahlias, zinnias, cosmos, and marigolds just to name a few.

Lisianthus is a summertime favorite among our team! Nothing compares to the lisianthus grown and nurtured by some of our local farmers like Holloway’s Garden.

Fall

Local autumn blooms feature rich textures and warm colors. In the fall, our arrangements become a little moodier and romantic. Dahlias, marigolds, and zinnias continue to thrive alongside the arrival of chrysanthemums, celosia, broom grass, milkweed, seed pods, and other unique seasonal accents.

Winter

While our access to local blooms reduces significantly as the days get colder and shorter, evergreen and festive winter berry add a beautiful touch of local charm to our work during the winter months.

Luckily, we work with a great team of wholesalers who help us source from growers around the world to supplement our blooms during this time.
