Meet Our Farmers
Our flower shop visitors frequently ask, “Where do you get the flowers?” At Willow and Star, many of our favorite flowers don’t travel far to reach our shop. Throughout the growing season, we source fresh, locally grown flowers from talented flower farmers across Indianapolis and central Indiana. We love bringing the beauty of our region’s fields and gardens into the arrangements we create each day.
From delicate spring blooms to colorful summer favorites and textural fall stems, locally grown flowers allow us to design with the seasons while supporting the farmers and small businesses in our own community. None of this would be possible without the talented and tireless farmers who grow the blooms. We’re excited to introduce you to some of the Indiana flower farmers who grow the beautiful, distinctive blooms you’ll find in the arrangements we design right here in Nora.
Without further ado, meet a few of the farmers we love working with:
Holloway’s Garden
Holloway’s Garden is one of the first flower farms we began sourcing from. Since the early days of Willow and Star Flowers, we have loved Holloway’s Garden blooms and for good reason! Not only do they grow unique varieties, but the quality is exceptional. From uniquely colored zinnias to ruffly snapdragons and the sweetest airy bits like bachelor button, feverfew, and cosmos, we can’t get enough of their flowers.
You may remember our shoutout to Holloway’s Garden in our “What’s in Season?” post. Lisianthus is a summertime favorite among our team, and nothing compares to the lisianthus grown and nurtured by Holloway’s Garden. The love the Holloway’s Garden team pours into their blooms is evident; each flower we receive from them is fresh, vibrant, and beautifully grown.
Sweet Peas Flower Farm
Sweet Peas Flower Farm offers their blooms earlier and later in the growing season than many of the farmers we work with, and for that we are grateful! Thanks to their hoop houses and dedication to working year-round, we have the pleasure of designing with local flowers from Sweet Peas as early in the year as late-February all the way into late October.
We count on Sweet Peas Flower Farm for some of our favorite flower varieties including ranunculus (everyone’s favorite!), anemones, snapdragons, and dahlias. They also grow eucalyptus, another fan favorite!
Eagleson Meadows Flower Farm
Eagleson Meadows Flower Farm blooms never fail to impress us. We turn to them for specialty varieties and flowers that are hard to find elsewhere. We especially love their coral delphinium, which we’ve never seen available by any other grower, and their chocolate cosmos. Yes, the dainty blooms actually smell like chocolate!
Why We Buy Local Flowers
Buying locally grown flowers isn't simply about geography. It changes what we're able to create.
Flowers harvested nearby can reach our shop exceptionally fresh and with a much smaller carbon footprint. They go from the farmer’s field to their bucket to our flower shop; they don’t require the extensive shipping and handling required for flowers traveling around the world. Local farms also give us access to delicate varieties, interesting foliage, grasses, branches, vines, and other ingredients that help give Willow and Star arrangements their loose, garden-inspired signature style.
Just as importantly, buying locally allows us to support other small businesses and the talented growers who are helping build Indiana's local flower community. Our flower farmers are some of the hardest working people we know. We're grateful to the local growers who entrust us with their blooms. Their work begins long before a stem reaches its final destination, and we're proud to help carry it from their field to our flower shop to your home.
This list is far from exclusive. We source from many local farms, and we love them all! Stay tuned for a follow up post featuring more of the hardworking flower farmers in Indianapolis and central Indiana.
Note: While we can’t exclusively use locally grown flowers — Indiana's seasons make that impossible, and some of our favorite varieties grow best in other parts of the world — we thoughtfully supplement gorgeous local flowers with exceptional blooms from trusted growers elsewhere.
